That's Why They Call It Work

The Simple-Minded Manager, Cutting Through Your Work-Life Chaos
In
these essays, I use acronyms and the meaning of words a lot to frame
the lessons that I have learned. The simple explanation is -- I did
this to make them easy to remember. But there is a more important
reason. Words are powerful dictators of behavior. I have learned the
importance of choosing words carefully. Once words are out of your
mouth, on paper or out on the Internet, you can't get them back. By
looking carefully at the various meanings and connotations of the
words we use, we are better able to understand and articulate clear,
yes simple-minded, explanations in the most complex and chaotic of
circumstances. This often requires considerable thought, time and
effort.
It is often difficult to be Simple-Minded.
The Simple-Minded Manager views problems in a certain way. While
recognizing that situations are complex, the Simple-Minded Manager
understands that there is usually a simple pure component, composed
of only one thing that can be isolated and altered -- a simple
matter.
The Simple-Minded Manager concentrates on solutions that are:
Occurring or considered alone -- the simple truth Not involved or
complicated -- a simple task Without additions or alterations -- a
simple yes or no With little or no ornamentation or embellishment --
a simple message Not elaborate, elegant or luxurious -- plain talk
The Simple-Minded Manager interacts with others in ways that are:
- Unassuming or unpretentious -- not affected
- Not guileful or deceitful -- sincere
The Simple-Minded Manager is unconcerned if this style is
misinterpreted as:
- Manifesting little sense or intelligence -- a simple way of
thinking
- Humble, ordinary or common -- simple and folksy
- Unworldly or unsophisticated -- naïve
The Simple-Minded Manager is more interested in
accomplishment than appearance.
It's not easy being Simple-Minded!
