Robin:
Seize the DAY

Sometimes
lessons come to you unexpectedly. The other day I rented an old
movie -- The Dead Poets Society, starring Robin Williams.
Williams' character is a teacher in a rigid private school. He
attempts to inspire the young boys in his class to break out from
their programmed thinking to sense a passion for creativity. In a
way it is a tragic story, because the school authorities,
considering his style too disruptive to their tradition, ultimately
force the teacher to leave. In a way it is a triumphant story,
because in that act, the authorities spark defiance in several
students that ignites the very passions the teacher so passionately
advocates. The teacher's simple lesson that evokes these explosive
actions and reactions is Carpe Diem -- Seize the Day.
For most of us in these chaotic times, seizing any day feels
impossible. There are so many forces buffeting us about. But it is
essential! You will not get this day back again! Your Vision,
Mission and Strategic Plan correctly focus on your future. Your
values are legacies of your past. What links them is simply this
day.
So, seize the DAY.
Seize the Decisiveness that is within you today. Make the
choices that pursue your mission now, the judgements that manifest
your values now, the resolution that executes your plan now. Have
the will to follow your own path now.
Seize the Attainable that documents your progress. Employ
resources that are accessible today. Use strategies that are
approachable now. Identify short-term goals, consistent with your
mission, that are obtainable in the present. Concentrate on what is
possible today. But, most important...
Seize the Yearning. Grab and hold on to that persistent
longing for something just beyond your reach.
Seize the DAY.
